Cheryl Boyd, PhD, RN, NE-BC, WHNP-BC, CNS, is Director of Professional Development for Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She is board certified as a nurse executive and as a women’s health nurse practitioner. She worked in nurse practitioner and program director positions in Tennessee with rural and urban underserved adolescent and adult patient populations. Boyd has 10 years of faculty and department head experience in undergraduate nursing programs. At The Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC), she was the Director of the Center for Nursing Excellence overseeing the Magnet Recognition Program®, nursing quality, nursing research, and professional development programs. In her current position, she oversees the provision of clinical education and staff development at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In addition to leading the Patient/Family Policy Committee for the past 7 years, she recently successfully completed leadership of a third Magnet Recognition Program designation. (Chapter 12)

Tracy Brewer, DNP, RNC-OB, CLC, is an Associate Professor at Wright State University College of Nursing & Health in Dayton, Ohio. She received her doctor of nursing practice in educational leadership from Case Western Reserve University, her master of nursing in education from Drexel University, and her bachelor of science in nursing from Miami University. Brewer’s research interests include understanding the organizational culture, as well as healthcare professionals’ and healthcare faculty members’ EBP beliefs, and implementation that fosters best practices. Brewer teaches undergraduate, graduate, and DNP students evidence-based practice and serves on several doctoral committees. (Chapter 13)

Jacalyn S. Buck, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, is an Administrator for Nursing at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Buck has oversight for nursing quality, research, evidence-based practice, and nursing education across the health system. Her background is in maternal-child health and nursing administration, where she has served in a variety of roles ranging from Staff Nurse, Assistant Professor, and Director of Nursing to Nursing Administrator in various healthcare settings. She also serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Buck is a member of the American Nurses Association, American Organization of Nurse Executives, Ohio Hospital Association, Council on Graduate Education for Administration in Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau International. Sheila Chucta, MS, RN, CCRN, ACNS-BC, has been a registered nurse for 30 years. She received her bachelor of science in nursing from Capital University and her master’s degree from The Ohio State University, where she also is pursuing her doctorate of nursing practice. Her career began at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in the neonatal intensive-care unit; a year later she moved to The Ohio State University Medical Center and the adult patient population, where she continues to focus her energies. Her entire career has been focused on many aspects of critical care nursing, including medical, surgical, cardiac, transplant, and burn-patient populations. (Chapter 11)

Joanne Cleary-Holdforth, MSc, BSc, RGN, RM, has been a Lecturer in Nursing at Dublin City University since 2002. Her career began in Limerick, Ireland, where she trained as a general nurse and midwife at St. John’s Hospital and the University Maternity Hospital, respectively. Cleary-Holdforth specialized in nephrology, dialysis, and transplantation at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, the national referral center for renal transplantation. She completed her degree and master’s in nursing at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Cleary-Holdforth is undertaking her PhD at Dublin City University, where she will explore the knowledge, understanding, and utilization of evidence-based practice (EBP) among nurses in Ireland. She completed the Evidence-Based Practice Mentorship Immersion Program at Arizona State University School of Nursing and Health Innovation in 2006 under the guidance of professors Bernadette Melnyk and Ellen Fineout-Overholt. Deborah A. Francis, MS, BSN, RN-BC, ACNS-BC, has been a registered nurse for more than 25 years. She received her bachelor of science in nursing in 1988 and her master of science in 2010; she is completing her final semester of studies in the doctorate of nursing practice program from The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Francis is certified as a clinical nurse specialist and medical-surgical nurse. She is working as a clinical nurse specialist in the medical-surgical areas at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Francis has presented locally and nationally at the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Academy of Medical Surgical Nursing, and Ohio Organization of Nursing Executive conferences. Julie Gerberick, MS, RN, CEN, is currently Education Nurse Specialist for Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where she has spent her entire 25 years as a registered nurse. Tami Hartzell, MLS, is a Senior Librarian and nursing liaison at Rochester General Hospital, a 500-bed community hospital. She is a graduate of the first evidence-based practice (EBP) graduate certificate program in the country and and is an Expert EBP Mentor. In this role, Hartzell works closely with nursing staff to improve patient care by fostering a spirit of inquiry and coaching staff through the entire EBP process. Hartzell collaborates with the Evidence-Based Practice Advisory Council, Magnet® Steering Committee, and Nursing Research Council to develop and refine EBP processes and training for staff nurses. This collaboration has resulted in a three-time Magnet redesignation for Rochester General Hospital. (Chapter 4)

Pamela K. Lake, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, earned a bachelor of science in nursing from Texas Woman’s University in 1975. After 25 years practicing in a variety of settings, she earned a master of science in nursing from the University of Texas at Tyler. She then taught for 16 years as a clinical instructor before she earned her PhD in 2013 from the University of Texas at Tyler, focusing on caring practice in nursing education. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Tyler. Together with Ellen Fineout-Overholt, she reframed the undergraduate nursing research course into one focused on evidence-based decision-making and continues to work with faculty to diffuse evidence-based practice across the undergraduate curriculum. Lisa English Long, MSN, RN, CNS, is an Instructor of Clinical Practice at The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Long received her bachelor of science in nursing from Eastern Kentucky University and master of science in nursing with a focus on parent-child health from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing. Long furthered her education by attending Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation and completed the graduate certificate program in evidence-based practice (EBP). She is presently a doctoral candidate at the University of Louisville School of Nursing with a research focus on the state of the science of evidence-based practice, shared decision-making, and understanding healthcare professionals’ and academic faculty’s understanding of EBP and its impact on patient, family, staff, and organizational outcomes. Long teaches EBP and has led system changes toward a culture of EBP in academic and practice settings. (Chapter 13)

Tina L. Magers, PhD, RN-BC, is the Nursing Excellence and Research Coordinator at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. She received her PhD in nursing education and administration from William Carey University, her master of science in nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and her bachelor of science in nursing from Mississippi College. She is an Expert EBP Mentor and received a graduate certificate from Arizona State University School of Nursing and Health Innovation in evidence-based practice. She is board certified in nursing professional development. Magers’ research and EBP interests include critical thinking of the new graduate, transition to practice, problem-based learning, and hospital-acquired infections. (Chapters 5 and 13)

Dónal O’Mathúna, PhD, received his bachelor of science in pharmacy from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, his PhD in medicinal chemistry from The Ohio State University, and his master of arts in theology/bioethics from Ashland University. He was Professor of Chemistry and Bioethics at Mount Carmel College of Nursing until 2002, when he returned to Ireland. There he is Senior Lecturer in Ethics, Decision-Making and Evidence in the School of Nursing & Human Sciences at Dublin City University. Since 2014, O’Mathúna has been Convenor of Cochrane Ireland, a role cofunded by the Ireland Health Research Board and Northern Ireland Research & Development Office to promote evidence-based practice (EBP) through the Cochrane Collaboration. O’Mathúna has been actively involved in the Cochrane Collaboration since 1998, is a co-author of five published Cochrane systematic reviews, and is supervising four ongoing Cochrane reviews. He coordinates training in systematic reviews across the island of Ireland, presents internationally on EBP, and has peer-reviewed publications in journals and textbooks. (Chapter 5)

Brenda K. Vermillion, DNP, RN, CCRN, ACNS-BC, ANP-BC, has been a registered nurse for 30 years. She received her bachelor of science in nursing, her master of science in nursing, and her doctor of nursing practice from The Ohio State University. She holds certifications as a clinical nurse specialist and an adult nurse practitioner. In 2013, she was appointed as Director of Health System Nursing Education at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Assistant Clinical Professor for The Ohio State University College of Nursing (OSUCON). Vermillion is an evidence-based practice mentor, teaches evidence-based nursing scholarship for the master’s prepared nurse at The OSUCON, and has authored and co-authored numerous evidence-based practice guidelines for her organization. Vermillion has been a presenter at multiple conferences related to critical care nursing and continues to be involved with the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Society of Critical Care Medicine, Association of Nursing Professional Development, and American Organization of Nurse Executives. Michele L. Weber, DNP, RN, CCRN, OCN, CCNS, APN-BC, received her bachelor of science in nursing from DePauw University and her master of science in nursing and doctor of nursing practice degrees from The Ohio State University. Weber holds active certificates of authority as a clinical nurse specialist and an adult nurse practitioner. For the past 10 years, she has worked as a clinical nurse specialist throughout all the intensive care units. She holds an active appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor through The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Weber is an expert in clinical care of complex and critically ill patients as well as an expert in the translation of evidence-based practice into bedside clinical practice. She has presented at numerous local, regional, national, and international conferences on a variety of nursing topics. (Chapter 11)
